Staying in the Present – How to Stay in the Present and Perform Your Best

I am often asked what staying in the present means and for me it is that the athlete is so focussed on what they want to do that their mind does not wander to any thoughts of past or future. As a human being you spend a great deal of time mentally flitting from the present to the past and to the future in any number of combinations and frequencies.

The main concern of not being in the present is that the athlete allows their mind to go back in time and relive (re-think about) past poor performance and negative events, thus lowering their confidence and ability to perform. Example: “I’ve missed a couple short putts today, I hope I don’t miss this one too!” Equally bad is allowing the mind to wander forward into the future and imagine either playing badly, or the consequences if they do play poorly. Example: “If I miss this putt then he wins the hole and match and I’ve lost the club championship!”

So the description of staying in the present is simple. Be so completely absorbed in the moment that there is no room for any past or future thinking interference but a simple explanation does not mean it’s simple to do. Far from it unless you are a Zen Master.

The problem is that we are human and our minds are prone to warn us of possible problems and while warning us to “Watch out! Don’t slice it here!” is fairly normal function, it’s very unhelpful when we are trying to stay calm, confident and in the zone.

I say warning us is normal function because it is our own natural protection system in action. You wouldn’t want your brain forgetting to warn you about stepping in front of a bus! The danger of a bad shot can bring humiliation, disappointment and anger so your mind will warn you against doing anything that risks a negative event, especially something that might be humiliating. Humans fear humiliation worse than death in many cases so it’s a powerful trigger for warnings!

In addition, golf is one of those sports where we have enormous amounts of time and opportunity to “get thinking.” In fast paced sports you really have to just react as the game is very dynamic which means there is less time to think about negative past performance or possible bad future “what if’s?”

All sports have time somewhere to allow thinking to wander but golf is also a game where the ball is always static when it is played so our thoughts can wander negatively virtually all the time. A sport like tennis allows thoughts to wander between points but at least while you are absorbed in playing the point the mind is very occupied and focussed with just playing.

Snooker and Pool games also require mental control while playing the shot and Darts would be another. Basically the faster paced the game, the less opportunity for the mind to wander out of the present at the crucial time just as the ball (or other object such as a puck) is played.

Developing deep focus in order to control your thoughts and keep them zeroed in on a specific thing is ultimately a learnable skill and a technique called “anchoring” from the field of NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) is very effective at triggering you into states of control.

While I do believe that you can develop deeper and deeper focus, I don’t think anyone will ever master it completely although meditation experts, such as Buddhist monks come very close. They have however spent years developing the ability to stay completely in the present.

I think the answer for most of us is to develop a really solid pre-shot routine and back it up with anchoring techniques and daily visualisation of the state you want to lock into every time you enter your pre-shot routine. You can also use “picking a club” from your bag as the start point for deep focus and certainly visualising yourself full of confidence and deep focus (In The Zone) every time you step onto a T would be a great idea.

That is why, you will easily tell the beginning and end of a movie but will get difficulty to explain the middle. You can still remember the moment details that happened at the beginning and end, but you will find difficulty to tell the same details that occurred in the middle of the storyline. The same thing applies when you listen to a presentation. The beginning and end are usually still well remembered, while the middle part has been forgotten.

If you experience something like that, then your listeners feel the same. Therefore, doing repetition is a simple way to make your audience remember what you have presented. This will make your presentation give strong impact because the audience will remember it well, from beginning to end.

Repetition principle

In the world of communications, you will know a very simple principle of repetition. This principle consists of three steps:

1. Tell the audiences what you are going to tell (tell them what would you explain to the next slide)

2. Tell them (explain the core of these slides)

3. Tell them what you have told (give a summary of the points you have just conveyed).

If we want to make sure that this doesn’t happen, we need to take action before we start to create our next presentation. Presentation tips won’t solve this problem. Just sitting down and hoping that we’ll get it right won’t do the trick. Instead, we need to ask the right questions before we start.

One question we need to ask ourselves is what the topic or subject is that we’ll be reporting on to our business audience. As simple as this question sounds, it’s actually critical to our ability to create a deliver an effective presentation. If you don’t completely understand what your subject is, then your presentation is going to go off course. The people who will be in your audience are busy people who have other things that they could be doing or other places that they could be. Finally, there is no way that you can cover everything in your speech. That means that you need to spend some time and think about what your audience’s questions will be. Being Present: Can Trapped Emotions Stop Someone From Being Present?

Ever since Eckhart Tolle’s book ‘The Power Of Now’ came out, being present has consumed the self help industry. And even people who were not into self development came across this book.


And whether it is a teacher speaking about being present or whether they are talking about how to make a cake, there is always going to be people’s interpretations of what something means.

These interpretations can be accurate and match up to what is being communicated or they can be completely inaccurate and have nothing to do with what is being communicated. The present moment is all there is and when one is not present then they are out of touch with the only moment that matters.

So although it is clear that being present is the ideal, it is not always easy to be present. At times, it can seem impossible and nothing more than a good idea.

And as it can be so difficult it can result in someone denying how they really feel or what they are thinking and all because they want to be present.


Being present then becomes a new name for denial and repressing how one truly feels. At first, this may seem like a great idea and one that may work for a short period of time.

Just like a new toy that a child receives from their caregivers; in the beginning their attention is consumed and then shortly after, it is thrown away just like the rest of the toys. The Child’s short attention span is still there and is not going anywhere; no matter how many toys are given.

And the same applies to emotions, feelings and thoughts. If they are denied and covered up, it is unlikely to lead to one being present. They will just come back, but when they do, they may be even stronger.


The primary focus when it comes to self development and change is often ones thoughts. And these are often said to be the biggest challenge in one being present. So when the mind settles down, one can then experience a greater sense of peace and harmony within.

So from this point of view the mind is the only thing that matters and the body is therefore irrelevant. But if one were to become aware of their thoughts, they would often see that they are nothing more than a consequence of how they are feeling in their body.

The Body

Feelings and emotions are in the body and based on these, the mind responds accordingly. When these are unpleasant feelings and emotions, it is normal for the mind to become obsessed and to endlessly think about certain things. And these thoughts can be positive or negative.

This is a defence mechanism that the mind uses to regulate pain and to ensure its own survival. For if there was too much pain it could be overwhelming and lead to death.

So the minds thoughts are a way to calm everything down and to avoid the pain that is coming up from the body.

The Present Moment

It may sound like the right thing to do to let go off ones thoughts, but these thoughts are often only appearing as a result of what is going on in the body. When the body is at a place of peace, the mind is likely follow suit.

And due to the pain that can build up in the body, it can cause someone to reject their body and to live in their head. This is done because it can feel safer than living in a body that is full of pain.

A lot of focus has been placed on thoughts over the years and this has resulted in the body’s power being rejected. And yet the body is where ones power really is and where the answers are found.

Trapped Emotions

So if one lives in their head due to what has built up in their body, there is likely to be a lot of trapped emotions and feelings. When the body is at peace, the mind can relax. But when the body is in pain, the mind is going to end up thinking excessively.

These can be emotions and feelings that have become trapped as a result of what has happened to someone as an adult and what took place during their childhood years.

This can include the following feelings and emotions: rejection, abandonment, betrayal, grief, fear, rage, resentment, anger, helplessness, hopelessness, shame, guilt and fear.

And just because they are trapped in the body, it doesn’t mean that they are not having an effect on one’s life. They are constantly looking to be heard in one way or another.

Letting Go

When one is present and in the moment, they are likely to be free of fear and other restrictive emotions. But if these feelings and emotions are trapped in the body, it is going to be practically impossible to be present.

And this is why it is important to let go of what has built up in the body. When this happens, being present will not be a struggle or something that involves force. It will be something that naturally takes place and all because there is peace in the body.


In many ways, the mind is simply a reflection of what is going on in the body. So getting in touch with ones feelings and emotions and releasing them is very important.

This can be done with the assistance of a therapist or a healer that will allow one to face them and release them.

A 5 Step Guide to a Better Presentation

So what makes a good presentation? Personality? Fantastic design? A good delivery? All of these are part of it and more. In this article we’ll take a brief look at a 5 step approach to assembling and delivering a presentation.

What is a presentation?

A presentation is a way of communicating information. A presentation is really a path for the audience through a chosen topic with signposts added so that they can follow you to the end point. You can’t really do this if you are not entirely sure where you are going. It has a starting point and you hope or expect the audience to be there at the end of it and to have leant something from it.

Step 1 What’s the plan?

As self-evident as this is, presenters can often overlook this especially if they’ve used a presentation a number of times. The plan may just involve reviewing what you are going to say and which slides you want to use. What should you leave out or rewrite? You could consider creating a design plan or storyboard of how the presentation will work. Most important of all decide what key points you want to get across.

Step 2 Who is my audience?

Whatever you want to say you need to consider the audience. Audiences range for the very general to the extremely knowledgeable. As such they will view presentation information differently. Who they are is as important as what you want to tell them and how you tell them.

Step 3 What’s on The Page?

We’ve all met that death by PowerPoint moment where each subsequent slide is filled with evermore text and yet more key points. Less is certainly more.

- Add some colours.

- Use graphics if you think they more clearly explain than text.

- Use short sentences.

- Ideally there should really be no more than three points to each slide.

The net effect is that an audience with less to concentrate on may also get more from the information. There is also a lower risk of information overload and sleep in a warm dark room. Always try to get someone to preview your presentation.

Step 4 Bells and Whistles

Microsoft Powerpoint has a wide range of tools that can make your presentation better. Do not be tempted to use every one of them. Using transitions between slides is a very nice effect as is the animation of bullet point and bullet point texts by controlling how they appear.

- Using multiple transition types as well as too much animation can be very distracting.

- Use multimedia material like video and sound if they add to the presentation and help get your message across. Don’t use them for the sake of it.

Remember each slide is an aid to your presentation and not the presentation. You are the presenter and your presentation is designed to help you get your message across.

Step 5 Practise, Practise, Practise

Nothing spoils a presentation more than a presenter who seems ill-prepared and who doesn’t seem to know what’s in the presentation. A printout can be useful to have to hand but more importantly thorough review and practice is what will help it far more.

We don’t become good presenters overnight but combining the right level of detail, thinking of our audience and trying to get it right on the day is a good start.
